Like most of us my life peaked somewhere around the second grade.  And with the exception of a few months that I spent working nights at WalMart its basically been one long depressing downslide ever since.  This song came out in 1985 after the downward spiral had started, but before it really took off, so I wasn’t in too bad a shape yet.

I can’t really find out much about Martin Ansell.  This song is pretty good and made it onto the seminal Better Off Dead film soundtrack.  Sort of a Duran Duran imitation I guess.  Sir Martin released a couple of other albums in the 80’s and may have done some studio work after that.

“No More and No Less” by Rational Youth

220px RationalYouth Heredity 150x150 No More and No Less by Rational YouthRational Youth seems like a great synth-pop new wave band I’d like to hear more of.  I think they were from Montreal and released a couple of albums between 80 and 85.  Supposedly they even regrouped in the early 2000’s and released a new record.

This particular song seems to be the embodiment of 1985 to me.  It just seems like something that could have only come from that year, not before or after.  Which probably means it was written in ’79, recorded in ’81 and then sat on their manager’s shelf for four years while they argued about a contract.

I feel like the song has a sort of Mister Mister feel to it.  If you were a pathetic, late-night DJ who was addicted to coke in the mid 80’s here is a list of jokes you would have said just before playing that “Broken Wings” song: 1) What if you’re on a first name basis with Mister Mister?  Do you just call him Mister or what? 2) What if Mister Mister goes to school and gets a degree in dentistry?  Do we have to start calling him Dr. Mister?

Vitamin Z 150x150 Burning Flame by Vitamin Z

Vitamin Z got started in 1985, and pretty much ended there.  Actually I think they formed in 1981, but this song hit the charts in the UK in ‘85.
